The Power of Community for Our Mental Health

This year's Mental Health Awareness Week, running from 12 to 18 May, is themed around ‘Community’ – a reminder of how important connection is to our mental wellbeing.

The week, led by the Mental Health Foundation, aims to celebrate the strength and value of community in all its forms. Whether it’s a group of friends, a family network, a supportive workplace, or a local group you feel part of – community plays a huge role in how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.

As a hypnotherapist, I often work with people who feel disconnected. They might be going through a major life change, dealing with stress, anxiety or low confidence, or struggling with old habits they want to break. One thing I’ve seen time and again is how isolation can amplify those challenges – and how connection can help us move forward.

Community offers more than just company. It gives us:

  • A sense of belonging – knowing we’re not alone.

  • Safety and trust – having people we can talk to without judgement.

  • Support – emotional or practical, when we need it most.

  • Purpose – a chance to contribute and be valued.

When we feel supported, we’re more likely to talk, take action, and care for our mental health. That’s why I often encourage clients to explore the relationships in their lives – and think about where they feel most like themselves. You don’t need a big network. Community can be one or two people who really “get” you. Or it might be something new – joining a local group, reconnecting with someone, or even finding a supportive online space.

I offer a calm, confidential space for people to work through what’s holding them back. Hypnotherapy helps people feel more confident, let go of unhelpful thought patterns, and build positive change. But it doesn’t stop there. When people combine that inner work with real-world connection, the transformation can be even greater.

So this Mental Health Awareness Week, take a moment to reflect:

  • Who helps you feel grounded?

  • Where do you feel you belong?

  • Is there a community you’d like to reconnect with – or explore for the first time?
